Back to Basics: Denim

Calling time on the skinny jean - what's your new style?

As the new season approaches, it's the perfect time to review and update your wardrobe basics - starting with your denim. The skinny jean has been a staple for some years now; it is finally time to say goodbye to your presumably large collection that have accumulated in your wardrobe over the last few years. Hey, they had to go eventually.

So, here we are in new, non-skinny-jean territory. Where to begin? I decided to start as basic as possible: jeans, t-shirt, trainers. It's easy, comfortable and completely effortless. This t-shirt is from Primark and the trainers are Adidas, but the look is so versatile you could shop literally anywhere to achieve the same result. And where else to shop for denim but Topshop? The MOTO Stepped Hem Straight Leg Jeans are perfect even for a petite figure as they are cropped anyway.

Taking inspiration from the likes of Dries Van Noten, House of Holland and Moschino, I have become addicted to leopard print. Animal print is huge this season and, let's be honest, leopard is the animal print. Channel your inner Kat Slater, release your inner animal, brave the leopard print! It's surprisingly flattering and spruces up any outfit - a perfect match for your new denim. I found this leopard print shirt in a vintage shop with a button missing so I managed to get it for an impressive £3 (there is no shame in chasing a bargain).

Overall, the best thing about the resurrection of the straight leg jean is the newfound coolness of a simple t-shirt and jean. Paired with the Gucci-inspired ASOS MOTH Flat Shoes and white off the should tee from Weekday - my new go-to for staple pieces - even jeans can now look fashion forward.
